The first mural in the new Walsh Intermediate School (WIS) building was completed a few weeks ago, created by Art Club students. Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai was chosen as the subject of the mural because of her dedication to speaking out for the rights for everyone to receive an education without persecution, especially for the rights of girls in Pakistan. The completed mural has made a huge impact in the new building, creating a stunning, colorful focal point that draws people in.

Students began planning the mural during virtual Art Club meetings in December. It was a challenge planning the design knowing that it was unclear when the group could meet in person. It was decided to create the mural in sections due to Covid restrictions. Each student got a panel with only a contour line of Yousafzai's face to use as a guideline. They were given paints and any other supplies that they needed to get started at home. We consulted weekly, sharing progress from home. Sisters Charlotte and Arianna Yeh were given the challenge to create a realistic drawing of the face for the center panel, using a stippling technique. Members began to meet in person in March and collaborated to make sure the composition was balanced. Students used stencils to incorporate the Pakistani words knowledge, peace and love to make the background wall.

The majority of the students that worked on the mural are in eighth grade with only two sixth graders. The students are so excited to leave their mark on the new building.
