04/14/2021 09:07 AMTown officials are warning residents seeking recreation to stay clear of Bittner Park this Saturday, April 17 from about 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. as the park hosts a hazardous waste drop-off through the Regional Water Authority.
Parks & Recreation Director Rick Maynard said it wasn’t clear if people would even be able to get into the park for most of the day, with likely lines of cars and other potential obstructions or issues with the waste collection initiative, which seeks to prevent pollution from aerosol cans, paints, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, and numerous other household contaminants with regular collections.
Maynard said people just wishing to use the park facilities, including the disc golf course or the skate park, should expect “limited to no access” on Saturday, at least through 3 p.m.
Guilford is a “satellite location” for waste drop off, according to the Regional Water Authority website, with only one day currently scheduled for the event. Residents can also drop off their hazardous waste at a location in New Haven from May 22 to Oct. 30, according to the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection website.
Anyone wishing to drop off waste must pre-register through Regional Water Authority, online at www.rwater.com/in-the-community/hazwaste-central.
