Breaking: Active Shooter in Branford

Branford Police are responding to an active shooter situation at 241 Main Street in Branford, near the intersection of North Harbor Road. One person has been reported as "walking wounded." Police have surrounded the three-story home, which has windows blocked by cardboard. The regional SWAT team Bearcat response vehicle is en route from North Haven.

State and local police have closed Exit 53 in Branford. Local businesses and homes have been evacuated where deemed safe; others have been advised to shelter in place.

At 1 p.m. Branford Police Department reported on Facebook, "...dealing with a barricaded person with shots fired in the area of Main Street near Cherry Hill Road. Please avoid this area, the scene is not safe. Several police agencies are assisting and the South Central Regional SWAT Team is arriving."

At about 2:15 p.m. a recently evacuated resident near the scene heard police calling for the barricaded man to come out/come down from where he is barricaded on a second floor at 241 Main Street, about two blocks west of where this photo was taken at one of several police barricades which have shut down the area. Customers were also sheltering inside businesses in Richlin plaza. 

Police are also asking those in the area not to live stream any police activity on social media, for the safety of officers and others.

***STATUS UPDATE: This is still an active scene and the South Central SWAT team continues to work towards a peaceful resolution. PLEASE AVOID THE AREA, DO NOT GATHER NEAR THIS AREA. Crowds only place additional stress on resources.

The Branford PD is being assisted by many area police departments including the Connecticut State Police. For the safety of those involved, please refrain from streaming video or sharing pictures of ongoing scene. We will provided updates when new information is available.

Incident Recap: Today at 12:03 pm, Branford PD received a report of shots fired in the area of Main Street / Cherry Hill Road area. Responding officers encountered heavy gunfire coming from the upper floors of a business/apartment building.  Additional 911 calls reported a gunshot victim nearby. This victim was later transported to the hospital with reported non-life threatening injuries.

Officers continued to face heavy gunfire and were pinned down until armored BearCat vehicles arrived. South Central SWAT continues to operate. The scene is still active and not safe.
