2020: The Photographer’s View

We learned to do things differently in 2020. At the first full day at Daisy Ingraham Elementary School in Westbrook, student Madeline McKeith gave an air hug and gets one back from Spanish teacher Yvonne Reynolds as she arrived at school. Speech Pahologist Kathleen Burk (left) and Library/Media Specialist Helen Sweet also greeted and helped direct the students. Find more iconic images from 2020 in the attached gallery. The job of a newspaper photographer is to be both everywhere at once and at the same time unseen, all while providing a unique viewpoint, capturing a detail or moment in a frame that the rest of us may have missed.

In a year like 2020, when so many were spending more time at home, the work of the Zip06.com photography crew led by Chief of Photography and Multimedia Kelley Fryer became more important than ever. To the ever-present challenges of weather, lighting, access, and deadlines, they added safety—for themselves and their subjects—to the top of the list. And they provided a window into a world that for many would have otherwise remained shut.
