Democrat Norm Needleman was re-elected as state senator for the 33rd District with about 54 percent of the vote, decisively beating Republican challenger Brendan Saunders, a newcomer to political races.

Needleman received 31,163 votes as the Democratic candidate and another 2,097 as candidate for the Independent Party, for a total of 33,260. Saunders received 28,342 votes as the Republican candidate.

Saunders conceded late on Election Day, according to Needleman.

“He called me at about 11 [p.m.] and he was very nice,” Needleman said. “It was a very good conversation.

“I’m honored that the voters of the 33rd District chose to re-elect me to the [State] Senate,” he continued. “I believe that working together with as many people as you can provides good results for the residents of the state of Connecticut.”

Should he be re-named chair of the Energy & Technology committee, “I’m going to work on holding the utilities accountable and getting the best rate structure for the people in the state...and also moving forward on carbon reduction and energy efficiency bills.”

Needleman also said hopes that the entire General Assembly will provide leadership “to get through this pandemic with the least amount of damage and destruction possible.”

Neither Saunders nor his representative responded to a request for comment.

“It has been an amazing journey and I thank everyone who supported my candidacy,” his campaign website stated. “I offer my congratulations to Senator Needleman and wish him well for the next two years.”
