10/21/2020 09:09 AMThe town is inviting residents to a virtual public information meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. on proposed pedestrian improvements around Elizabeth C. Adams Middle School, which would aim to extend pedestrian access underneath the I-95 interchange toward sports facilities and other infrastructure to the north.
Included in the project is “curbing, minor drainage modifications, accessible ramps, and a rectangular rapid flashing beacon,” according to a release from the town.
Town Engineer Janice Plaziak called the project, of which 80 percent of the cost is funded by a federal grant, “an important safety aspect for the town,” allowing students from Adams to safely travel on foot to the facilities at the Guilford Racquet and Swim Club as well as the Guilford Art Center.
“Instead of having to be bused to these locations or walk on a less-safe roadway, would have a safe way to make their way there,” Plaziak said.
Because of the funding and because the project is affecting a state-designated scenic road, the town is required to hold more public information sessions and advertise more widely, according to Plaziak.
Construction is unlikely to begin until late summer 2021 at the earliest, Plaziak said.
