09/24/2020 12:00 AMOn Sept. 9, the Old Saybrook March for Justice resumed its weekly marches in front of The Kate. The group articulated its goals and partners. These goals are focused on greater equity in its communities through incorporating historically relevant materials into education and using arts and culture to share this information (like the Underground Railroad trail), working for health equity. One way to start is for local towns to join the 16 Connecticut towns that have adopted the “racism is a health crisis” resolution and started collecting data, and working towards more welcoming zoning laws to make housing affordable in this region.
Dr. Mellisa Pensa, member of the Old Saybrook March for Justice and author of recent article, stressed the importance of creating health equity.
Officer Anthony Nolan from the New London Police Department spoke at the march on Sept. 9, speaking about the police accountability bill and ways in which it would create greater accountability and support community policing. He also shared challenges he faces daily being both “blue and Black.”
The Old Saybrook March for Justice marches will now rotate to different towns. Upcoming marches are Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Town Hall in Deep River and Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Kate in Old Saybrook.
