Unofficial Presidential Primary Results

The Aug. 11 presidential primaries brought no surprise winners—presumptive candidates Donald J. Trump (R) and Joe Biden (D) easily carried their party votes—the number of voters participating by mail-in ballot was significantly higher in this first modern-day election held during a pandemic.

In Essex, where 340 Republicans and 954 Democrats voted, 189 of the Republican and 759 of the Democrats’ votes came in via mail.

“The primary was a good opportunity for us to see how we can run the election during the COVID pandemic, how we can keep our election workers safe,” said Essex Registrar of Voters Caitlin Riley. “We had a much higher absentee turnout than we normally do...[and] we anticipate for the general election that we are going to have a significantly higher absentee return.”

While an executive order from Governor Ned Lamont that allowed ballots postmarked by Aug. 11 and received by Aug. 13 delayed reporting from the polls, a close statewide primary race for Republican U.S. Congress candidate also triggered a recount set for Aug. 18; that race between Thomas Gilmer and Justin Anderson, is further complicated by the withdrawal of Gilmer, the party- endorsed candidate, following his arrest on charges of second-degree strangulation and first-degree unlawful restraint of his girlfriend.
