State Rep. Candidate Kathy Grant Endorsed by AFT Connecticut

Kathy Grant, Democratic state representative candidate for the 87th District, has been endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Connecticut for the upcoming Nov. 3 election. AFT Connecticut represents more than 30,000 workers in the public and private sectors. Its membership includes teachers, school-related personnel including paraprofessionals, state employees, healthcare workers, and higher education faculty and staff.

According to Teri Merisotis, legislative advocate for AFT, the decision to endorse Grant’s candidacy was made because of Grant’s commitment to working families and advocating for issues that are important to AFT Connecticut’s members.

“Clearly, this election is very important to the people of Connecticut,” Merisotis wrote. “We need strong leadership that will help turn this state around, and [Grant’s election] is a critical part of this.”

“I am very proud to have received the endorsement of the AFT,” Grant said. “Its members are the backbone of the state, and particularly now, during the COVID pandemic, their need for effective representation in Hartford is more urgent than ever. Their trust in me as a candidate is an honor.”

Grant is serving her second term as the North Haven Democratic Town Committee chairperson. She also serves on the Town of North Haven Blight Appeals Board, was a member of the town’s Board of Assessment Appeals from 2014 to ’19, and was treasurer for the League of Women Voters for three years. She is a former Girl Scout troop leader, Green Acres School PTA board member, and Christian educator, and she volunteers for the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center. She is a former member of AFT, having previously worked for the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch as a support enforcement officer.
