Hall Puts Hat In for 35th District GOP Vacancy

The Republicans have likely their new candidate in the District 35 state representative race: Westbrook Selectman John Hall III. The choice will not be official until the Republican delegates of the district nominate him.

On Aug. 11, incumbent Jesse MacLachlan (R-35) announced he had dropped out of the race. On Aug. 12, Hall decided he would pursue taking the spot on the ballot vacated by MacLachlan.

“I heard it from Jesse firsthand and then I was approached from Republican leaders in the district. I asked for 24 hours to talk it over with my family and then I said ‘I’m in,’” Hall said on his decision to replace MacLachlan on the ballot.

Hall said that as of press time, MacLachlan hadn’t yet officially dropped out according to the office of the secretary of the state. Once the paperwork is received and the resignation is official, Republican delegates of the 35th District will convene a committee to fill the vacancy, at which point it is expected they will nominate Hall. All of that must occur before Hall is officially the Republican candidate in the race.

Hall has been on the Westbrook Board of Selectmen for more than 10 years and has deep ties to the area. He and his wife, Bonnie, own and operate Maple Breeze Farm, which was established by his family in 1635.

The 35th District serves Clinton, Killingworth, and northern Westbrook. Hall will face the Democratic nominee, Christine Goupil, who is currently a member of the Clinton Town Council.

The Harbor News/Zip06.com will provide updates on the race in the lead up to the November election.
