Madison Bans Beach Swimming, Fishing, and Shellfishing Following New Haven Sewage Spill

The town announced last night that all beaches would be closed to swimming, fishing, and shellfishing pending testing of the waters after a sewage leak dumped 2.1 million gallons of raw sewage into the Long Island Sound in New Haven.

A sewage pipe near Hamden was the source of the leak into the Mill River, which carried the sewage into the Sound, according to New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker.

Health Director Trent Joseph told The Source that samples have already been collected and delivered to a state lab in Rocky Hill, and the “turnaround time” for results is 12 to 24 hours.

The town will take more samples if the sample result exceeds the standards for swimming water quality established by Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP), Joseph said. Any potential cleanup will also be in conjunction with DEEP, according to Joseph.

Branford, East Haven, Guilford, and West Haven have also closed their beaches following the spill.
