06/26/2020 12:00 AMFollowing a discussion of a proposed, earlier proclamation in response to the killing of George Floyd, the Black Lives matter movement, and for individual rights in general, the Clinton Town Council issued the following statement on June 22:
Town of Clinton Public Statement
“The death of George Floyd while in custody was a horrifying act of aggression. His death has raised questions across the country and here in Clinton about the proper response to this and other acts of injustice. As a council, we are unanimous in condemning such acts and we are committed to allowing every voice to be heard on these crucial issues. As a council, we fully support peaceful protests and the safety of all participants and we stand for the care and protection of all community members. Many have called for reforms at the national, state, and local level and we as a council are committed to doing our part.
“As a council, we also want to recognize that the men and women of the Clinton Police Department are fully committed to the fair, equitable, and compassionate treatment of all people, regardless of race, religion, gender, creed, or color. Since early 2016, the department has been operating on a community policing model, which incorporates many of the six pillar recommendations of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Police Report of 2015. Clinton police officers work directly with our school system, social services, and many local charity groups to deliver services which help to build community trust and allow us to design programs that can help reduce crime without the need for enforcement.
“As a council, we are committed to working with our police department towards improving community relations and services by assuring that our department has the resources necessary to train to and implement national best practice standards, which reflect the ideals that value everyone in our community.
“The most fundamental object of government is to protect the safety of all who live, work, and visit our community. We are all committed to that goal and to building a community where every single person is treated with courtesy, respect, and understanding and we encourage actions and decisions that eliminate all injustices.”
