Branford Rec's 'Drive-In Movie Night' Coming to BHS July 15

Register now, then turn the clock back and bring the kids to a drive-in movie in Branford on Wednesday, July 15, at 8 p.m. Branford Parks and Recreation is offering the special night of safe-social distancing and community fun with a one-night only set up outside Branford High School (BHS). A professional company will bring the big screen and Disney's classic movie, "Toy Story." Instead of hooking up to old-school speakers, audio will be picked up over car radios set to the show's special frequency.

Parks and Rec program coordinator Andrea Kenney said the company found the large, slightly sloped "C" parking lot beside BHS to be a perfect venue for a pop-up drive-in movie.

"We're going to put the movie up top, and we'll use the existing spaces. We'll use every other space for safe-distancing," said Kenney, adding the size of the screen allows for a great vantage point from any space in the lot.

With proper social distancing, Kenney anticipates the lot will hold about 80 vehicles, which is why pre-registration is required. The cost is $15 per vehicle. Residents can register at www.branfordrecreation.org under "Tickets" or call (203) 488-8304. For an additional $10, Parks and Rec is offering a snack-pack of popcorn, candy and two bottles of water. 

Viewers are also encouraged to participate in the night's collection of food donations by bringing along items to be donated to Community Dining Room (CDR). CDR can especially used canned goods (vegetables, fruit, soup, broth, stew, tuna, beans, olives), olive oil, tomato sauce, mayonnaise and peanut butter.

Viewers will need to stay in their vehicle during the drive-in movie, which begins 20 minutes after dusk and is scheduled to end at 10 p.m. Vehicles can be pulled in or backed in for the best viewing.

Branford Parks and Rec is also accepting sponsorships to help defray event costs and also help to bring a second drive-in movie night to town this summer, said Kenney.  If enough sponsors can be secured, the plan is to bring in another all-ages classic, "The Goonies," to the site in August, she said.  Organizations, businesses and groups interested in a sponsorship are asked to email akenney@branford-ct.gov
