Branford's Pier 1 Imports store is going out of business as part of a nation-wide decision by the parent company to close all 540 stores Pier 1 stores in the U.S.

After filing bankruptcy in February, 2020, Pier 1 corporation had announced it intended to seek a buyer for the company. However, due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the business announced on May 22 its decision to go out of business. The company stated it would initiate store closing sales at all stores as they were reopened in accordance with state COVID-19 safe operation guidelines.

In a message to customers last updated June 8 at its website, www.Pier1.com,  the company stated that, on May 22, "...we filed a motion seeking court approval to begin an orderly wind down of our operations as soon as reasonably possible after store locations are able to reopen following the government-mandated closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. In partnership with our financial and legal advisors, we engaged in a thorough analysis of all available alternatives before deciding on this course of action. Ultimately, due to the combination of a challenging retail environment and the new reality and uncertainty of a post-COVID world, we and our advisors determined that we will wind down the business. As a result, we intend to initiate store closing efforts and sales once store locations can reopen. In the meantime, we are continuing to serve customers through Pier1.com."

Connecticut allowed non-essential retail businesses to re-open during Phase 1, which began May 20. Pier 1 in Branford is currently holding a store-wide going out of business sale. Located at 1078 West Main St., the Branford store will be open seven days a week during the closing process. Store hours listed at the website are Monday –Sunday noon – 7 p.m.

The company has not announced final day of business at stores, which will be based on a "variety of factors," according to the message posted at www.Pier1.com

According to history of the business shared at the website, Pier 1 Imports opened its first store in San Mateo, CA in 1962. Since 1969, the company's corporate headquarters has been in Fort Worth, TX.

"Please know that this was an extremely difficult decision and is deeply disappointing for all of us at Pier 1," the company states in its message to customers. "We have loved serving you over the years and are so grateful you chose to shop with Pier 1. During the closing process, we will be pleased to continue serving you."
