North Branford Public Schools Cancel 2020 Summer Camp

Special Education Summer School Moving to Virtual Learning Program

Superintendent of Schools Scott Schoonmaker notified parents today, May 28, that the district has canceled North Branford Public Schools (NBPS) 2020 Summer Camp and Special Education Summer School programs, with the special education program moving to a virtual learning program.

"In conjunction with East Shore District Health Department, our School Medical Advisor and administration, we carefully reviewed the many components of summer camp that would be significantly affected or difficult to accomplish. We also considered the data which the Health Department shared with us which indicates that this virus is still considered 'active' in our community," stated Schoonmaker, in the notice published at www.northbranfordschools.org

Schoonmaker also noted that, "...while we would like nothing more than to run this camp as an outlet for children, we must put the safety and health of the community at the forefront. We know that this is a great disappointment for many families and campers and we certainly understand how everyone is feeling. The summer camp program is a source of happy times for both staff and campers and we look forward to providing a great opportunity for campers in the Summer of 2021!"

The notice also shared the 2020 NBPS Special Education Summer School Program will be a virtual learning program running June 29 - July 24. Parents/guardians of children eligible for the learning program will receive information direct from the NBPS Office of Special Services.

In closing his message of May 28, Schoonmaker wrote, "We understand the gravity of these decisions and hope that you can understand the difficulties we encounter when balancing the needs of families, staff and students while considering the safety and health of all involved. My thoughts continue to be with all of your families – stay safe!"
