Old Saybrook Distributes Masks to 156 Local Businesses

Old Saybrook’s Office of Emergency Management’s second round of mask distribution took place on May 18 at Old Saybrook Middle School (OSMS), where 3,740 FDA-approved masks were provided to 156 businesses.

Businesses were asked to complete an online form in advance. The effort was organized much like the distribution of masks to residents not quite two weeks earlier: A representative of the business drove to OSMS, where a series of stations were set up to verify that the business was located in Saybrook, determine the number of employees, and provide the two masks for each employee.

“It was so well organized and run,” said Susan Taylor, who has an insurance business on Main Street. “I went and it was so quick and smooth running. I was very comfortable picking them up and now I’m happy to have them.”

Taylor doesn’t have many people coming into the office right now but said she will use the masks when she meets with customers face to face.

Mary Ella Luft picked up masks for Lighthouse Home Health Care, also located on Main Street. Luft is an R.N. who works in staff development for the agency.

“It was an outstanding gesture that they did and extremely helpful in this town,” Luft said. “We’re a home care agency, so we’re one of the essential people. And there’s a companion care agency here, as well, so we deal with the patients all the time.

“Supplies have been difficult to obtain,” she explained. “So the addition of them giving them to us is extremely helpful.”

Making the experience even more pleasant was the fact that all the police officers working the event were “very polite, very friendly,” Luft said.
