05/26/2020 12:30 PMOutside of a successful primary challenge, last week’s party conventions have selected the candidates for the General Assembly’s 23rd and 35th district.
In the 23rd District, which serves Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and coastal Westbrook, Republicans endorsed three-term State Representative Devin Carney to return to Hartford. Carney will face a challenge from Old Lyme small-business owner and Attorney Dave Rubino.
According to his campaign press release, Rubino, who has spent most of his career promoting American democratic values abroad, will focus on addressing the repercussions of the COVID-19 crisis while planning a future that keeps the area attractive to businesses and supports working families.
Carney, who works in finance and real estate, was born and raised in Old Saybrook and lives in Old Lyme with his significant other, Lisa. He serves as ranking member of the Transportation Bonding Subcommittee and serves on the legislative committees overseeing Transportation, Planning & Development, and Finance, Revenue, and Bonding.
For the 35th House District, which represents Clinton, Killingworth, and northern Westbrook, incumbent Republican Jesse MacLachlan was nominated for a fourth term at convention. He’ll face Christine Goupil, Clinton’s former first selectman.
Goupil has a professional background in project management at KPMG, Clear Channel Communications, and The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment.
