At a time when fundraising has become increasingly difficult without the ability to hold a fundraiser, Goupil’s campaign defied all expectations by raising more than 170 in-district contributions in less than 24 hours. To qualify for Connecticut’s landmark clean elections program, a candidate for state representative must raise 150 contributions from residents within the district.
“Christine’s incredible feat is a clear indication that she has the grassroots’ support to win by defeating the current incumbent,” said Emily Bjornberg, president, Shoreline League of Democratic Women. “The enthusiasm shown for her campaign is just through the roof.”
“People know Christine Goupil is an ethical leader who always does what’s right for the people. She doesn’t shy away from making tough decisions, and when she was our first selectman, she successfully led the fight to convert Clinton into a Town Manager/Town Council form of government, even though it eliminated her own position and salary as first selectman. That’s the kind of leadership we need in Connecticut right now,” said Jack Scherban, past member of the Clinton Board of Selectman and chair of the Board of Finance. “We need leadership willing to act in our best interests, not someone who only thinks about how to get re-elected.”
“I cannot thank the people of our district enough,” said Goupil. “I am excited to have so many people come forward to join our team this early. To qualify for public financing in one day is just amazing, and the message is clear: It’s time for change—it’s time for a state representative who will work hard and fight for us, who understands the needs of our towns at the local level.”
She continued, “Connecticut needs a path forward right now, a path past this pandemic to safe recovery. To chart that new course, we will need to invest in a Connecticut Green New Deal to create new green jobs. We will need to protect our healthcare and lower the cost of prescriptions. We will need to strengthen our technical schools and increase college affordability. We will need long-term planning that makes exceptionally difficult decisions to restructure our budget. But we can do this. We can get to a better future. It won’t be easy, but by working together and standing up to special interests, we will do exactly that—we will chart a new course for Connecticut.”
The 35th House District represents the towns of Clinton, Killingworth, and Westbrook. Goupil is the former first selectman of Clinton and was the last first selectman. Currently, she serves on the Town Council and the Connecticut River Area Health District Board and Central Regional Tourism District Board. Goupil has a professional background in project management at KPMG, Clear Channel Communications, and The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment.
