Shoreline Treasure and Tradition Guilford Fair Canceled for 2020

The Civil War, the Hurricane of 1938, and World War II: These are among the reasons the Guilford Agricultural Fair, first held in 1859, has been canceled. We can unfortunately add the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020 to that list.

According to a post by Guilford Agricultural Society President John Hammarlund on the fair’s website guilfordfair.org, “Due to the uncertainty created by the Covid-19 virus in our community, and with the health and well-being of our more than 20,000 patrons, volunteers, exhibitors, and vendors being our primary concern—and after much discussion and thought and hope—the Board of Directors of the Guilford Agricultural Society has decided to cancel this year’s Guilford Fair, scheduled for Sept. 18, 19, and 20, 2020.

“We regret having to take this course of action, but want to err on the side of caution,” the post continues. “We would like to thank all of our volunteers, members, directors, our many exhibitors, our amusement company and the community for all their hard work preparing for this year’s fair.”

The post ends with an upbeat message, however.

“We look forward to seeing you in 2021 with a bigger, stronger, and very special fair.”
