Madison Memorial Day Parade Canceled Due to COVID-19

Unfortunately, this year, the Memorial Day Parade is canceled. As this is a long-standing tradition in our town, it is sad that this has to happen.

Griswold Post 79 of the American Legion and VFW Post 2096 would like readers to know that there are other ways to honor their favorite veteran this year. They can put a flag on their mailbox or flag pole, hang a red ribbon around their favorite tree (this is showing support of our health care workers and first responders also), display a picture of their loved one to show solidarity to our town with your patriotism, and, if their veteran is still living, call and thank them for their service.

Because of this cancellation, the annual poppy drives are also postponed. The organizations will try to get back out there with them around Veterans Day.

Flags will still be placed on all cemeteries and a wreath will be laid at the monument near the Old Town Hall. There will not be a ceremony and the organizers ask all to stay home. The Connecticut Air National Guard will still conduct a flyover at some point, probably around 10:30 a.m. The public is encouraged to go out on their front porch and wave to them. They are doing this to honor our veterans. This is always a favorite part of our parade.

Thank again to everyone from your Madison veterans. We hope to see you all soon.
