Westbrook Middle School Principal to Resign at End of School Year

Westbrook Middle School (WMS) Principal Taylor Wrye will leave his position to begin a new one as principal of Granby Memorial Middle School.

His last day at WMS will be June 30, he said in a letter he emailed to WMS parents on April 23. The Granby school district announced his appointment, whose effective date is July 1, on April 22.

Westbrook Public Schools Superintendent Patricia A. Ciccone said she knew the appointment was a possibility when she was asked for a letter of recommendation upon Wrye’s designation as a finalist for the Granby position. She learned of Wrye’s new appointment on the evening of April 22, when it was announced at the Granby Board of Education meeting by Granby Superintendent of Schools Jordan Grossman.

Westbrook’s Board of Education (BOE) is expected to formally accept Wrye’s resignation at its next meeting on Tuesday, May 12, Ciccone said. The Westbrook district has not made a public announcement.

The search for Wrye’s replacement will also be discussed at the meeting, said Ciccone.

“[W]e can certainly, if it’s the BOE’s choice, post the position and begin collecting application information,” she said. “Whether or not they would want to go through the interview process...or hold up and have the new superintendent build their own team—that will be up to the board.”

In early March, Ciccone announced her retirement in June.

Wrye and his family live in Granby and his two children are enrolled in Granby Public Schools.

Wrye began his tenure at WMS in October 2017, just after the school year started. He had previously served as principal of Williams Middle School in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

Wrye grew up in Lake George, New York and earned a certificate of advanced graduate studies in educational administration and leadership and a master of arts in teaching at Emmanuel College in Boston. He expects to complete a doctorate at Drexel University in May 2022.

Under Wrye’s tenure, WMS was named best middle school in Middlesex County by Niche.com, a website that analyzes and ranks schools, neighborhoods, companies, and colleges.
