Surrounding towns may have more than one large supermarket chain within their borders implementing COVID-19 precautions; but if you live in North Branford, there's just one: Big Y World Class Market at 1289 Foxon Road (Route 80).  The Massachusetts-based chain has been providing nearly daily COVID-19 updates to customers and media at www.bigy.com as it works to protect customers and employees at its stores across MA and CT.

Here are some of the details shared in updates posted between Thursday, March 25 and Monday, March 31:

MARCH 31, 2020: "All Big Y World Class Market locations go through several daily cleanings designed to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect our customers and employees.

Areas of our enhanced cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting focus include carriages and carriage handles; handle baskets; self-checkout areas; time clocks; phones; customer and employee bathrooms including bathroom door handles; frozen food, dairy, meat, seafood and bakery door handles; all counter tops; all food preparation areas; and employee break rooms.

Our cashiers, service clerks and other frontline staff pause every hour to wipe down and sanitize their work areas as well as to wash their hands. These hourly wipe-downs include registers, register belts, POS screens, cashier and customer displays, EFT terminals and key-pads, and plexiglass shields.

Additional COVID-19 mitigation efforts we are taking include special store hours for seniors and those with compromised immune systems, social distancing reminders, free paper and plastic bags, and plexiglass screens at checkouts. We have closed our cafes, all self-serve drink and coffee areas, all bulk product bins, self-serve product areas such as donuts/bagels/muffins etc., suspended bottle redemption and discontinued operation of blood pressure machines in pharmacies."

MARCH 27, 2020: "In order to help stem the spread of COVID-19, all Big Y World Class Market locations are now offering paper and/or plastic bags at checkouts free of charge. Customers in Connecticut who choose to use their reusable bags will be asked to bag their own groceries for everyone's health and wellness. In compliance with the state order in Massachusetts, reusable bags have been banned from use until further notice."

MARCH 25, 2020: "Big Y Announces Safety Plexiglass Installation in All Locations. Big Y World Class Market has installed clear plexiglass screens at checkout counters at 17 of our store locations. We intend to complete installations at all store locations by the end of this week.

As an essential service, we are doing all we can to remain fully open and well-stocked to serve the public. Therefore, we are adding this extra layer of safety to protect our customers and employees as well as to help stem the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19)."
