02/26/2020 11:00 PMThe release of this year’s Next Generation Accountability Index scores marked a significant jump in rankings for Old Saybrook Public Schools with the district placing ninth in the state overall this year, up from 47th overall last year. According to the recently released results for the Next Generation Accountability Index, a series of scores collected by the State of Connecticut as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act, Old Saybrook Public Schools earned 100 percent of the possible points in five categories, including College and Career Readiness, Graduation Rate, and Arts Access. Old Saybrook’s index score has even resulted in Kathleen E. Goodwin School and Old Saybrook Middle School both earning School of Distinction awards for academic performance and growth.
The index represents a global look at school districts across the state by measuring against 12 different indicators including state level assessments, academic growth, and graduation rates. Essentially, a district’s index score is a lot like an annual physical for the school district, and Old Saybrook Public Schools is very healthy. On tests of academic achievement, Old Saybrook Public Schools earned 99 percent of the possible Index points in English language arts, 95 percent of the possible index points in mathematics, and 94 percent of the possible index points in science. The district’s growth in English language arts was 19 percent higher than the state average. In mathematics, Old Saybrook outpaced the state’s growth rate by 18 percent.
“We are very proud that our teachers and students have demonstrated their excellent work through the results of these assessments, but we recognize that these tests tell only part of the story of their successes from the classroom to the arts and athletic fields, as well as in the community at large,” said Superintendent of Schools Jan Perruccio.
