Daytime Gardeners members recently worked with local girl scout, junior girl scout, and brownie troops to create posters for the National Garden Club Smokey the Bear and Woodsy Owl poster contests. Members Barbara Feinberg, Mary Ellen Proto, and Brenda Howlett met with Junior Girl Scouts Troop #60400, led by Cheryl Soli and Amanda Gabriele, to create posters for the Smokey the Bear contest. A first place poster drawn by Abriella Horowitz was selected to compete with winners from other towns across Connecticut. The second-place winner was Brynley D’angelo; Alice Gabriele won third place.

Members Pat Cramer, Feinberg, Proto, and Howlett met with Junior Girl Scout Troop #60387 led by Lisa McCann, and Brownie Troop #60421 led by Jennifer Morgan, to create posters for the Woodsy Owl poster contest. A first place poster for each grade was selected to compete with winners from other towns across Connecticut. First place winners are Jazzlyn Perez (grade 2), Evelyn Bennett (grade 3), Ava Barone (grade 5). Winners for second place were Emily Kelleher (grade3) and Samantha Lewandowski (grade 5). Teagan McCann (grade 5) won third place.

State winners will move on to the national level sponsored by the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Ultimately, a winning poster in each contest will be selected for use during 2020 by the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

The Daytime Gardeners club is actively seeking new members. For more information, email proto.mary@yahoo.com or visit the club’s Facebook page.
