PD: East Haven Bank Robber Fled through Back Yards, Apprehended at Home

An arrest has been made after an individual entered Key Bank, 245 Main Street, East Haven, on Jan. 30 and passed a note to a teller demanding money.

At approximately 9:09 a.m., the East Haven Public Safety Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a Key Bank employee reporting a robbery. The employee stated that a white male wearing all black passed a note demanding money, then fled in an unknown direction. The suspect did not brandish a weapon during the incident.

Dispatch immediately provided a description of the suspect, which matched the description of an individual police were looking for earlier in the day who was wanted for an outstanding arrest warrant. That individual was identified as Michael Jensen, 53. Officers arrived at Jensen’s house, 32 Edward Street, East Haven, a short time later and set an exterior perimeter before attempting to make contact with the occupants of the residence. Jensen was located in the rear yard of his residence and was detained.

Jensen was found to be in possession of a large denomination of cash, which was secured as evidence. After speaking with several witnesses, officers learned that after the robbery, Jensen fled through several yards back to his residence, and appeared to be hiding behind a shed once he heard police sirens approaching. Another witness, who stated Jensen held the door for him as he was fleeing the bank, positively identified him as being the bank robbery suspect after a one on one witness identification.

A Connecticut State Police K-9 officer arrived on scene and conducted a track in an attempt to track Jensen’s path of travel after committing the robbery. As a result, key evidence was found in a trash receptacle linking Jensen to the robbery.

Jensen was placed under arrest and transported to the East Haven Police Department, where he was processed and photographed. Jensen was charged with robbery in the second degree in violation of Connecticut General Statute 53a-135, larceny in the fifth degree, 53a-125a, and interfering w/an officer/resisting, 53a-167a. Jensen is currently being held on a $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at G.A. 23, 121 Elm Street, New Haven.
