The Garden Club of Madison pledged an additional $35,000 to the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library Futures Campaign for the opportunity to name the Garden View Seating Area and Multimedia Equipment. This gift, in addition to a $15,000 donation made previously by the garden club for the naming of the Crescent Garden, brings the library closer to fully funding its renovation and expansion project.

“We are thrilled to support our community by investing in the Scranton Library” said Garden Club of Madison President Debbie Hernandez.

In February 2017, Madison residents approved a $9 million bond for a $15 million library renovation and expansion. In addition to the bond, the library construction project is being paid for, in part, with state funds provided by the Connecticut State Library. State grants total $2,000,000. Library trustees have raised $3,550,000 to date in private donations.

“I am continuously amazed by the abundance of community support for the library renovation and expansion project. This gift from the garden club is a wonderful reminder of the exceptional town that we live in and the kindness of others,” said E.C. Scranton Library Board of Trustees President Nicole Wiles. “In addition, this donation moves us closer to our fundraising goal of $6 million and inspires the trustees to continue this community-changing work.”

Renovation and expansion of the building began in October 2018 when the library closed its doors and moved to the temporary location at 1250 Durham Road, Madison. The project is currently on time and on budget and there are tentative plans to open the library in July 2020 just in time to celebrate its 120th anniversary.

“We can’t wait to re-open our permanent building and connect everyone with all of our new spaces, services, and community resources,” said Library Director Sunnie Scarpa.

During the period of time the library is under construction residents are encouraged to visit the Scranton Library at the temporary location, 1250 Durham Road, Madison. For more information about the library, visit scrantonlibrary.org or call 203-245-7365.
