01/14/2020 02:00 PMThe Parks & Recreation Commission is raising some beach fees ahead of the upcoming summer, hoping to encourage residents to buy season passes instead of paying for single day access to Guilford’s two beach-area parks, according to Parks & Recreation Director Rick Maynard.
The town is also raising the price of non-resident passes slightly, Maynard said.
For Guilford residents, the price of a daily pass for a family or individual—up to five people in a car—will go up from $10 to $20, Maynard said. Non-resident daily passes also doubled, from $20 to $40.
The price of a non-resident senior pass went up slightly also, from $20 to $25.
“I talked with my counterparts in Clinton and Madison,” Maynard said. “[In] Clinton, for a non-resident Monday through Thursday, they were charging $50 a day. On weekends it’s $75 a day. So we’re still way under that. In Madison, I believe they don’t do season passes for non-residents, but it’s $10 an hour.”
Maynard say a consideration for the town is less transactions and “less cash being handled at the beach.”
“It makes a lot of sense. You talk about $35 for the whole season for a family,” Maynard said, “versus paying $20 once. It’s almost a no-brainer—get a season pass, which you can also get at the beach.”
The new fees apply to Jacobs Beach and Lake Quonnipaug, according to Maynard.
