On Saturday, Dec, 14, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. the Main Street area of downtown Deep River will be hopping with holiday happiness for the annual Holiday Stroll, which for the second year in a row features the Parks & Recreation Department’s lighted parade down Main Street at 5 p.m.

The parade invites all vehicles decorated for the holidays (especially lights) to participate.

“This is the second year for this event and it was super fun last year, so we are expecting it to be even bigger and better this year,” said First Selectman Angus McDonald. “As the event grows, we are in need of more volunteers so anyone looking to help out, or get involved, please get in touch with the Parks & Recreation Department.”

Those interested in joining the parade can call the Parks & Recreation Department at 860-526-6036 or register at deepriver.recdesk.com.

This year, the parade will travel a slightly different route coming from Bridge Street, down Main Street, to Essex Street and then loop up to the Elementary School.

“The light parade enhances the holiday experience of the stroll and it’s a great time for people to visit our town, shop, and have fun. Our Main Street has so much to offer all year long, but particularly during the holiday season,” McDonald said.

In addition to the parade, there will also be a tree lighting, fire performance, caroling, Find the Holiday Moose Contest, specials and treats at downtown shops and restaurants, and of course a visit from Santa at the Town Hall.

In conjunction with the evening’s event, there will be the voting and judging of the seventh annual Festival of Trees put on by the Deep River Historical Society. This year’s theme is Traditions Around the World.

Both the Carriage and Stone Houses, which house the trees, will be decorated with joy and open for voting and viewing. The trees are represented by Deep River non-profit organizations.

Voting will take place on Friday, Dec. 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 14 from 3 to 8 p.m. Viewing of the winning trees, with their ribbons, will be Sunday, Dec. 15 from noon to 3 p.m.
