Jordan Keeler and Garrett Smith, both recent graduates of Westbrook High School, have attained the rank of eagle scout. Only 6.5 percent of scouts achieve this status.

Keeler and Smith, both scouts together since 1st grade, committed to many hours of community service, earned at least 21 merit badges, and finally completed an extensive service project.

For the service project, Smith and Keeler spoke with town officials to propose possible projects that would benefit Westbrook. First Selectman Noel Bishop and other town leaders offered suggestions and support. Once they gained approval from the town hall, they planned, organized, raised funds, recruited volunteers, and led all aspects to complete the project.

Smith’s eagle scout project involved the proposal, planning and implementation of a trailhead kiosk at Chapman Mill Pond. The structure marks the beginning of the trail and supports a glass enclosure cabinet for posting the trail map and important environmental information.

For his eagle project, Keeler oversaw the construction of a landscape wall in front of the first Congregational Church in the center of Westbrook. The wall not only serves to enhance the beauty of the Town Center, but will also provide a seating area for people to enjoy.
