10/17/2019 12:01 AMThe Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center (The Kate) celebrated a 10th anniversary concert on Sept. 11 with the very first band to ever play in the hall—the Pure Prairie League. During the festivities, the band was welcomed as the first artist in the Kate’s Walk of Fame. In honor of the occasion, the band presented The Kate with an autographed guitar that will be on display.
The Walk of Fame will be situated on the Main Street side of the building, in front of the iconic white columns. Individuals may buy a brick and add a custom message in support of The Kate that will be displayed on the face of the brick. All pavers will be grout filled for a crisp and durable display.
The Kate opened on Sept. 11, 2009 and is located at 300 Main Street, a building that was first constructed in 1911 as a theater and community center. The building is owned by the Town of Old Saybrook and is on the Register of Historic Places. A significant restoration project was just completed by the town that included repair and painting of the columns and concrete steps. Additionally, The Kate raised funds to add exterior lighting, install new carpet and paint the interior, as well as replace some of the theater chairs. A grant from the 1772 Foundation and Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation helped to fund the repair and painting of all of the exterior wooden windows and sills.
