10/15/2019 12:00 AMAugusto “Gus” Lucarelli is running as an unaffiliated first selectman candidate in the town of Deep River to bring a new perspective to the Town Hall.
An immigrant who came to America with his family at a very young age, Lucarelli grew up in Old Saybrook. He has lived in Deep River for the past 20-plus years and has raised all five of his children in town, the youngest of whom is 18 and recently graduated as part of Valley Regional High School’s class of 2019.
Owner of Deep River-based Lucarelli Fence, Lucarelli, who was endorsement by the Republican Town Committee but chose to appear on the ballot as a petitioning candidate, feels that his alliance with the working people of Deep River makes him a perfect fit for the position of first selectman.
Prompted to run for the position by what he called “questionable interactions” going on at Board of Selectmen meetings he attended, Lucarelli said he has a desire to be involved in town government and wants to work hard to make a change.
“I have a strong work ethic, and strong moral code and I work well with others,” said Lucarelli. “If elected, I want to be more transparent and more representational of the town’s people and more involved with running the town as a team of people instead of one big boss.”
Lucarelli said he is willing to do what it takes to make a difference in town government in Deep River and bring the town back to the people. He wrote in a Sept. 5 letter to the editor “Hard Work Lies Ahead,” “Recently, upon discovering that the current first selectman, Angus McDonald, was again being unchallenged in the upcoming election, I decided to step forward. My traditional upbringing has taught me to stand for what is right. As first selectman, I will work to change town government to be open, responsive, and ethical.”
“I’ve reached tough goals before in my life and I have confidence that I will reach this one, too. I am committed to listening to and representing the people of Deep River. My call to residents is to get involved, to stay committed, and to vote,’ said Lucarelli.
