10/15/2019 12:00 AMDemocrat Angus McDonald is once again running for the seat of first selectman in Deep River.
McDonald first became first selectman in 2016 after long-time selectman Dick Smith passed away unexpectedly. In 2017, McDonald ran for the seat unopposed.
“There are several projects I have started that I want to see through to the end,” said McDonald of his choice. “One big project is the fire house being built, replaced, or improved. We are very close to coming to the town with a full plan and I would like to see through to the end.”
McDonald, who moved to Deep River in 2005, said he is proud of the progress he has helped the town make over the past few years and he is looking to further that progress into the future.
“I think fiscally the town is in good shape, considering where we were ten years ago and where we are now. Our industrial space in town is mostly full and we have done a good job of attracting new businesses to town and keeping the businesses we have here,” said McDonald.
McDonald also would like to implement joint meetings of boards and commissions on a quarterly basis, to encourage cooperation and communication among the Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Selectman, Conservation Commission, and more.
“I think Deep River is a marvelous town filled with a diverse group of people who have created a wonderful community and enjoy working here,” said McDonald.
McDonald said his time in office has given him a special appreciation for the volunteer, first-responder emergency workers in town who always go above and beyond to keep the town safe.
“Before I became first selectman, I didn’t realize how much these people do,” hes said. “Now that I am more involved in what they do, I am amazed at how incredible they are and I am forever grateful to them.”
He added, “I am very grateful for the opportunity to have served as the first selectman and I am hopeful that I will have the chance to do that again. I think the town is in good shape and I think it needs someone with some experience to move it forward in the completion of some major projects we are currently working on.”
