Madison Voters Have Many Options for 2019 Municipal Elections

Less than a month before the municipal elections, Madison has a handful of races to watch, with a hotly contested bid for first selectman that pits incumbent Tom Banisch (R) against Peggy Lyons (D) at the top of the ballot.

Banisch is seeking a third consecutive two-year term. Lyons previously served as chair of the Madison Democratic Town Committee and on the Board of Finance before seeking the seat. The Source will feature profiles on both candidates in a future issue.

On the Board of Selectmen, incumbent Republican Jean Ferris has chosen not to seek re-election. Incumbent Democrats Scott Murphy and Al Goldberg and Republican Bruce Wilson are joined by Erin Duques (R) running for a selectman seat. The four selectmen candidates will compete with the unsuccessful first selectman candidate for one of four selectmen seat.

Three out of six positions on the Board of Finance are up for election this year, with five candidates seeking the four-year position. Minority representation rules allow a maximum of four candidates from one political party to sit on the board. Republicans Justin Murphy and Filmore McPherson are running, along with Democrats Kevin Kranzler, John Picard, and Seth Klaskin.

Kranzler and Murphy are the incumbents, with Murphy having recently assumed a seat vacated by Mark Casparino (R), who stepped down from the board this summer.

The race for four Board of Education seats is uncontested. Happy Marino (R) will not seek re-election, nor will Klaskin, who is seeking a position on the Board of Finance. Chair Katie Stein (D) is seeking re-election, as is Glenn Cawley (R). Cathy Miller (D) and Diane Infantine-Vyce (R) will be the new faces on the board.

On the Board of Assessment Appeals, there are three candidates running for two seats on the five-person board. Republican incumbents Lynne Hubbard and Richard Robinson are seeking re-election, while Melanie L. Clark (D) is chasing a spot on the board. Ian Taylor (R) is not seeking re-election.

The Zoning Board of Appeals race is uncontested, with Stephen Somma (R) not seeking re-election. Incumbents Ned Moore (D) and Thomas Kelty (R) will each seek another four-year term, and will be joined by William Piggott (R), who is currently serving as an alternate.
