Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport Launches Master Plan Update

Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport (HVN) has just launched a master plan update (MPU). When finalized and approved early in 2021, the MPU will provide HVN with a vision and blueprint for at least the next 20 years. By creating improved access to the worldwide air transportation system, it will help define HVN’s important, emerging, and transformative role in the economic vibrancy of all Southern Connecticut.

An MPU is a standard, periodic Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) process, funded primarily by the FAA with participation from HVN’s governance body, the Tweed-New Haven Airport Authority (TNHAA). TNHAA, created by state statute, operates HVN under a long-term lease from its owner, the City of New Haven. The Town of East Haven also concurred with the lease agreement. HVN’s last MPU was completed in 2002.

The current effort will be conducted under the guidance of nationally respected airport-industry consultant McFarland Johnson of Binghamton, New York, and a team of four sub-consultant partners. McFarland Johnson has participated in similar studies for markets such as Trenton, Greenville-Spartanburg, and Burlington airports. Importantly, the process will include a robust community and stakeholder outreach effort, a technical advisory committee of industry aeronautical experts, and state-of-the-art accessible, software-based support mechanisms.

HVN is committed to a transparent, inclusive, and rewarding MPU process aimed at bettering the quality of life of every Southern Connecticut resident and the long-term health of every current and prospective Southern Connecticut business enterprise. HVN will continue efforts to advance the airport, while at the same time respecting the concerns of nearby residents. Throughout the lengthy process of the MPU, Tweed and its consultants will reach out to local communities in the fall to listen to and address their views about the airport. HVN stakeholders proposed a package of community benefits and stand by the offer, although the community outreach process could lead to a different set of ideas. The airport authority encourages everyone to participate in the MPU process to share their views.
