BCTV recently started taping a new program, A Certain Age, hosted by Li Hayes, for broadcast in Branford and neighboring communities. The show celebrates women who in the prime (and middle) of their lives have done something amazing. These women’s stories—about starting a business, battling breast cancer, overcoming alcoholism, creating a women’s equality movement—are intended to inspire others.

Hayes was motivated to create the show after a close friend, who is in her 50s, lamented that she had never completed her college degree. Hayes suggested that she go now, to which her friend replied, “It’s too late for me. This is it. This is my life.”

Hayes was immediately determined to inspire her friend and others with the stories of amazing middle-aged women who keep reinventing themselves and inspiring others. The opening monologue to the broadcasts states: “A woman reaches a certain age when someone says to her, or her inner voice says, ‘At your age, you wouldn’t, you shouldn’t, you can’t…On A Certain Age, we celebrate those amazing women who inspire us because they can, they will and they do exceptional things.”

“Age should never be a limiting factor,” Hayes said. “Women have the ability to keep doing new things and reaching higher in their personal endeavors and in the service of others their entire lives! Life does not end at 40. In fact that’s when women start to have their greatest successes.”

Past and upcoming shows include:

• Dr. Cathy Lomartra, a local chiropractor, decided that as she moved toward semi-retirement that she would pursue her dream of being an artist, creating paintings and building furniture.

• Cindy Ashton, a professional actress, opera singer and keynote speaker, started a 100-day national campaign to get women equal opportunities in public speaking.

• Sonia Satra, a former Guiding Light star, needed to find a way to move forward when her career and life closed in around her, so created the Moticise exercise program.

• Dr. Tihesha Wilson, a single mom who achieved the position of chief of breast surgery at Richmond University Hospital, saves lives and provides dignity to victims of breast cancer with therapeutic and reconstructive surgery.

• Eunice Lasala, local icon and philanthropist has created funds for the care and humane protection of Branford’s domestic, feral, or wild animals.

According to Hayes, “interviewing each one of these wonderful women has been my privilege, and I am honored to share my time with them with the Connecticut shoreline community.”
