A Farewell to Appell

On Sept. 13, World War II Army veteran Wallace Malley Appell made his final journey on a caisson, escorted by Old Saybrook Police and Greg and Marsha Young with the Patriot Guard Riders from Swan Funeral Home. Appell, 97 of Old Saybrook, had survived being shot down in a glider over the Netherlands in 1944 and being held a German prisoner of war for nine months until the end of the war. He was laid to rest with full military honors at the Riverside Cemetery. Here, the caisson driven by John Allegra and Wayne Swan arrives at Riverside Cemetery.
