09/11/2019 08:45 AMWhile Veteran’s Day is always a special occasion, this year is looking to be especially illustrious as Guilford’s own American Legion Post #48 celebrates its 100th anniversary.
The anniversary will be marked by a veteran’s appreciation dinner on Friday, Nov. 8 at the community center, with any veteran and all members of the public welcome. On that day, the post is planning to hand out a commemorative booklet that will include messages of support and thanks from individuals and businesses all around the community.
“It’s mostly a way for members of the community to...support the American Legion,” said local historian Tracy Tomasselli, who is helping organize the anniversary celebration.
Tomasselli said she also sees the booklet as a way for people to remember or honor loved ones who are veterans. People and businesses can pay as little as $10 to help sponsor the booklet, or purchase space—from business card size to full page ads—in order to pay tribute to the veterans who have contributed to the community.
As a historian, Tomasselli has also been doing research into the storied history of Post #48, whose members have done everything from planting trees after hurricanes to providing scholarships for high school students.
“It’s a way veterans can serve not just in war but in peace,” said Tomaselli
Money raised by the booklet will go toward funding American Legion programs, Tomaselli said.
