North Haven Goes Back to School Aug. 28

North Haven schools open for the 2019-’20 school year on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The tentative last day of school is scheduled for Monday, June 15.

Teachers will be back in the schools on Monday, Aug. 26, followed by another professional development day on Tuesday, Aug. 27. Staff and students will have three days of classes before adjourning for a long Labor Day, returning Tuesday, Sept. 3.

School will also be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 10 for the primary elections.

Other significant dates for the district include:

Friday, Sept. 6: Montowese Elementary School Back to School night

Monday, Sept. 9: North Haven Middle School open house

Wednesday, Sept. 9: band parent night at all elementary schools

Wednesday, Sept. 18: North Haven High School open house

Tuesday, Sept. 24: Clintonville Elementary School open house

Thursday, Sept. 26: Green Acres/Ridge Road elementary schools open house

Schools will also be closed Monday, Sept. 30 for Rosh Hashanah, Wednesday, Oct. 9 for Yom Kippur, Monday, Oct. 14 for Columbus Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5 for Election Day, and Monday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. There will be early dismissal for all students on Friday, Oct. 4 and Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Other school breaks are from Monday, Dec. 23 to Wednesday, Jan. 1; Monday, Feb. 17 and Tuesday, Feb. 18; and Friday, April 10 through Friday, April 17.

In a shift for the school district, students at Green Acres Elementary School will be greeted by their new principal, Philip Piazza, EdD, who served for 12 years as principal of North Haven Middle School (NHMS). Laurie Bankowski is the new NHMS principal.

Students at North Haven High School will also have a new point of pride upon returning to classes. The school has earned continuing accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The school completed its decennial evaluation process in fall 2018 and recently received confirmation of its successful outcome along with feedback and next steps.

According to a press release from North Haven High School Principal Russ Dallai, those next steps include “ongoing work to ensure quality teaching and learning experiences rooted in NEASC standards. During the next few years, NHHS will transition from NEASC’s 2011 standards to its new 2020 standards. Among other important areas, the school’s 2019-’20 focus will be curriculum development.”
