The Exchange Club of Madison honored Claire Chang, daughter of Anna and Sandy Chang, with the David Bell Scholarship Award for the June 2019 Youth of the Month. The Daniel Hand High School (DHHS) senior was nominated by the DHHS faculty and completed a competitive application including an essay titled “How I Am a Catalyst in my Community.”

During her four years at Hand, Claire Chang was a high honors student, captain of the DHHS math team, member of the National Honors Society, and co-founder of Violence to Voices to demand common-sense gun control from our local politicians. Chang was active in other extracurricular activities including being a founder of the DHHS Spanish Club her sophomore year and president of Hand Book Club in her junior year. Additional awards included the 2018 Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents’ Award, Princeton Book Award, Gettysburg College Book Award for American History, and an AP Scholar Award. Also, of special note, Chang and her sister Aimee Chang formed a violin-piano duo Sorelle Allegre (“happy sisters” in Italian) to raise money for the Madison Food Pantry.

Claire Chang attends the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division in New York City, and has attended the Chinese Language School of Greater Hartford, both as a student as well as a volunteer after graduating. She will continue her education next fall at Yale University.
