Leah Pfrommer of Killingworth was selected as the 2019 AAUW CT Shoreline Branch Scholarship recipient. Pfrommer graduated cum laude from Quinnipiac University’s Class of 2018 with a B.S. in health science and a minor in Spanish. At Quinnipiac, Pfrommer was a member of Quinnipiac’s NCAA Division I Women’s indoor and outdoor track team on which she earned Scholar-Athlete distinction for three consecutive years and was named captain in her final year. In September, Pfrommer will begin her studies at the University of Connecticut to pursue a master of science degree in health promotion in the Coordinated Dietetics Program. As a future dietitian, Pfrommer’s goals are to work with athletes to achieve optimum performance through healthy nutrition, and/or to assist individuals with eating disorders. Pfrommer’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition is evident by the community service activities in which she was involved. She produced the HKTV Telethon that raised more than $400,000 for various community organizations including the Shoreline Soup Kitchen; she volunteered at a medical clinic in the Dominican Republic focusing on good hygiene and nutrition; and she led children’s groups to learn about healthy eating. In Pfrommer’s words, “I am extremely grateful for this scholarship because it will further my education so that one day I can help others.”

The Scholarship Committee scores and reviews the scholastic credentials, financial need, and leadership/service of each of the candidates. The following AAUW members contributed to the unanimous decision: Sue Cohn, Eloise Brady, Joan Filbey, Liz Goss, and Rita Holmberg, chair.
