In observance of Memorial Day, the Old Saybrook Historical Society will sponsor a guided tour of the Upper Cemetery, North Main Street, Old Saybrook, on Sunday, May 26 at 4 p.m. to honor the veterans from America’s conflicts.

Scott Carson, a member of the Old Saybrook Municipal Cemetery who has conducted extensive research on the cemetery and its final resting places, will lead the guided tour.

The 2.7 acres that comprise the cemetery are the final resting place for 48 identified veterans from the French and Indian War, American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, and more.

It holds the remains of many of Saybrook’s most prominent families, including Bushnell, Whittlesey, Clarke, Chalker, and Spencer along with Thomas Acton (1823-1898), a New York City politician and reformer and Old Saybrook summer resident, after whom the library is named. It also contains the headstone memorializing “Fero, the faithful slave of William Lynde who died March 20, 1801, AE 72 yrs.”

Admission for the tour is $5. There is no charge for children accompanied by an adult. For more information, call the historical society at 860-395-1635.
