All Aboard: Clinton Hopes to Launch Summer Trolley Service

Visitors to some of Clinton’s most popular locations this summer may be able to use a method other than cars to move around. The Clinton Economic Development Commission (EDC) announced a plan to provide a shuttle bus during several weeks in July and August that, if all goes to plan, would be free both to passengers and the town.

The shuttle bus, which has been dubbed the Clinton Trolley by the EDC, would run for 25 hours a week. The hours of operation would be 5 to 10 p.m. on Fridays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. According to EDC Chair John Allen, the trolley would run on a half-hour schedule and make five to eight stops at destinations like the Clinton Crossings Outlets, the train station, Shanks restaurant, and Post Office Square. Allen said that the route is to be determined.

Before the shuttle is official, the EDC must first secure the donation required to operate the shuttle. Allen said that the bus is being provided by 9 Town Transit. It would cost $60 an hour to operate the bus, and then cost about $10,000 to decorate the bus and place ads. Allen said that local businesses have been approached to donate to the cost.

“There’s been a lot of initial interest,” Allen said.

Allen said the group is in the process of getting commitments from businesses now, but said it looks promising that the trolley will be a reality this for this summer.

“We got a wind to our sails,” Allen said.

Allen said along with the EDC, the Clinton Placemakers, and Clinton Chamber of Commerce all contributed to making the idea a reality.

“I’m excited about it. It’s one of those things we’ve been kicking around for years,” Allen said.

The idea was in part inspired from other similar trolley and shuttle services Allen has seen in other locations such as Cooperstown and Key West. Allen said the shuttles create a fun atmosphere. While Allen acknowledged the obvious benefit of using the bus to shuttle people to and from some of Clinton’s main attractions in town, he said the other benefit “is to make it show.”

“I want to make it fun, and have people say ‘Here comes the trolley’” said Allen. “It makes Clinton an exciting vibrant place to live.”
