After Delay, Amazon Fulfillment Center Set to Open in July

The long-awaited opening of the new Amazon fulfillment center at 409 Washington Avenue will have to wait another couple of months for a delayed opening, but the hiring process will begin soon with job fairs to be held in town in June.

“Originally we thought [it would open] by the end of May, but it looks like July 1. They’re still putting the finishing touches on the building,” First Selectman Mike Freda said.

He said that the delay in opening is most likely due to the sheer number of positions Amazon will need to fill to get the operation up and running.

Initially, Amazon is planning to hire 1,500 to 1,800 people. In the future, that number could go as high as 3,000.

“Their goal is to get people hired to start filling these positions during the month of July. It could end up being Aug. 1 where all the employees are hired, ready to go,” Freda said.

“Because of the number of jobs, they’ll probably be hiring from the greater New Haven region, which could be as far north as Meriden…up the shoreline and down I-95 south,” Freda said. “What we see in these major projects is a diversified level of employment from various cities and towns.”
