03/22/2019 12:00 AMThe Region 4 Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Espinosa to the position of principal at John Winthrop Middle School. Espinosa has most recently served as principal at Tuttle Elementary School in East Haven over the last five years.
Prior to his experience as principal at Tuttle Elementary School, Espinosa was principal at Joseph Melillo Middle School in East Haven. In addition to his experience as a K-8 school leader, Espinosa also served as assistant principal at Hale Ray High School in East Haddam for four years. He began his career in education as an 8th grade English language arts teacher at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School. Espinosa was widely respected as an outstanding and committed educator and educational leader. In 2006, he was named Haddam-Killingworth Middle School Teacher of the Year.
Espinosa received his B.A. in English from University of Connecticut and his secondary teaching certification from Eastern Connecticut State University. In addition, he received his M.A. in humanities and literature from Wesleyan University. He earned an additional advanced graduate certification in educational leadership and administration from Sacred Heart University.
The Region 4 Board of Education was impressed with Espinosa’s overall leadership experience, commitment to excellence, collaborative leadership style, and enthusiasm for working with middle school students. The Region 4 Board of Education unanimously endorsed Espinosa on March 18, following an in-depth interview. The board is confident that Espinosa will provide exceptional leadership in continuing the mission of John Winthrop Middle School and Region 4 Schools.
Espinosa resides in Guilford with his family. He will begin his position at John Winthrop Middle School on July 1, 2019.
