Guilford’s Mill Pond Closed for the Season

There will be no more skating on Mill Pond this season. Town officials said dramatic temperature swings over the past few months have left the ice too thin for skating.

Parks & Recreation Director Rick Maynard said the town had three days of skating this year. Maynard said previously the department generally doesn’t open the pond until there is about five inches of block ice—ice that is formed by pure frozen water, not snow that has thawed out and refrozen. To get that much ice, the temperature needs to stay below freezing for about 8 to 10 days.

“Though it is cold this week, there is snow on it and the ice is not thick enough for us to get on with equipment to clear it off,” he said last week, before the current thaw. “The freeze-thaw cycle had an impact.”

Residents are asked to respect the “No Skating” signs at the pond.
