Steve Tracey Announces Bid for Mayor

On March 5, Steven “Big Steve” Tracey became the first to enter the ring for November’s mayoral race, offering an early challenge to a possible re-election bid from fellow Republican Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr.

“After listening to the taxpayers and concerned citizens of East Haven I believe it is time for a different approach to manage East Haven,” Tracey said in a release. “We need new ideas and positive leadership to face the demands of Connecticut’s economy and our state’s disastrous financial situation.”

Tracey currently serves as town councilman for District 4. He made his first run for elected office in 2016 when he narrowly lost to then-incumbent James Albis in the State Assembly District 99 race.

He is also a former professional wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment and current partner in DiAdamo-Tracey & Big Steve Bailbonds on Main Street.

Maturo, who in the past two elections has declared his candidacy in January, said last week he plans to make his decision to run this week.

“I welcome anybody and everybody to enter the mayor’s race,” Maturo said. “I think if I decide to enter, I’ll be mayor for the next two years.”

Though Tracey is the only announced candidate for mayor, Republican Town Committee (RTC) Chair Bob Parente said he has heard from several others who are considering a run.

“The party does have to put forth the best person to retain our position in town hall,” he said.

Parente said that Tracey informed him of his intention to run as a Republican. Parente is expecting to hear from more candidates looking for the R endorsement.

Parente said he hopes the prospective candidates will prepare thoughtful presentations for the RTC at its convention, expected to be held in late July or early June.

“Hopefully Mayor Maturo makes a decision sooner rather than later,” Parente said. “I honestly don’t know which way he is going.”

Tracey’s campaign also did not return requests for comment.

“It’s nothing that needs to be decided in the next two weeks. Both parties have time,” Parente said.

Town Democrats have also not officially announced their candidates for the election.
