At its Feb. 20 meeting, the Branford Economic Development Commission presented Madison Polymeric Engineering, Inc. (MPE), with its Business Recognition Award. The EDC periodically presents the award to a Branford company that is a leader in its field and that contributes to making Branford a better place to live and work.

Walter L. Maguire, Jr., founded MPE in 1978 and moved the nascent enterprise eventually to a manufacturing space on Beaver Road in Branford in 1999. In 2008, he purchased the shuttered Echlin property on West Main Street and relocated MPE there after remediation and renovations.

Today MPE occupies 150,000 square feet of design and production space with more than 50 full time employees working to meet the product needs of its medical and packaging customers. MPE is currently pioneering the development of sustainable and recyclable molded pulp products for the food service and packaging industries to replace molded plastic counterparts.

In addition to Branford, MPE has facilities in several other states as well as in Juarez, Mexico. The Branford facility also houses a spin-off company, Cygnus Medical, founded in 2000, specializing in endoscopy and surgical products.
