Deep River Standoff Ends Peacefully

On March 2, the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU) assisted Troop F personnel in the execution of an arrest and weapons risk warrant (stemming from an earlier incident on Feb. 28) for Lindsay Smith, 78, of 92 Stevenstown Road, Deep River. After a lengthy standoff, ESU negotiators encouraged Smith to surrender peacefully.

Troop F held active warrants for Smith, who is known to possess firearms. Smith was aware of the warrants and made threatening comments previously to law enforcement about the pending execution of those warrants. When troopers attempted to serve the warrants, Smith refused to exit his residence.

ESU negotiators communicated with Smith for more than 3 ½ hours and he was eventually persuaded to surrender peacefully. Smith was arrested and numerous firearms were seized. He was charged with second-degree breach of peace and held on a $250,000 surety bond. He is scheduled to appear at GA 9 Middletown Superior Court on Monday, March 4.
