Clinton Grand List Bumps Up Again


Newly released numbers from the Assessor’s Office show that Clinton’s 2018 Grand List saw a small increase from the previous year. Clinton’s Grand List increased by 0.59 percent. The total tax revenue from the increase is $278,470.

A Grand List is a listing of all taxable property located within the town on Oct. 1 of the same year. Along with the town and school budgets, the Grand List is used to calculate the towns mill rate. The mill rate is used to calculate property tax. Clinton’s mill rate is currently 30.54. Given a flat tax rate, an increase to the Grand List will contribute to the mill rate going down, while a decrease will lead to the mill rate becoming higher.

The Grand List is broken down into three categories: real estate, personal property (primarily business equipment), and motor vehicles.

Each grand category saw an increase after exemptions were calculated. Real estate is the town’s largest taxable category and accounted for $1,379,627,368 (about a $5.5 million increase), Personal Property accounted for $63,405,399 (about a $1.4 million increase), and motor vehicles accounted for $101,513,538 (about a $2.1 million increase.)

“Mainly I would say the increase is due to new construction in town,” Assessor Donna Sempey said.

Th top 10 taxpayers in town have remained the same as in the previous year, however the dollar amounts have changed.
