Old Saybrook Rotary Club Provides Disaster Relief Funds

The Old Saybrook Rotary Club has pledged $15,000 to disaster relief efforts in three areas of the United States that recently experienced natural disasters.

The communities of Richmond and League City, Texas received funds to replace home refrigerators lost in the flooding from Hurricane Harvey. Additional funding helped the Boys & Girls Home of Wilmington, North Carolina to replace and repair damage to its property after Hurricane Florence. Each community received a $5,000 donation from the Old Saybrook Rotary Club Foundation to be distributed through local Rotary Clubs in each of their respective communities. On a more local level, as part of the club’s community services approach in helping others, $2,500 was donated to the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme for resettlement of residents from Puerto Rico displaced by Hurricane Maria.

Old Saybrook Rotary Club President Sam Fulginiti and Old Saybrook Rotary Foundation member Charlie Norz explained that this effort is part of the ongoing assistance to areas of the country that have endured hardships.

Fulginiti further explained that “each recipient club in Texas and North Carolina will be best aware of the needs of their communities.”

“The extremes of hurricanes, fires and other natural weather disasters took a very heavy toll on the populations of all three communities,” Norz said.

The Old Saybrook Rotary Club was founded in 1927 and meets weekly. Besides aiding disaster relief efforts, the Old Saybrook Rotary Club provides scholarships to high school seniors, heating assistance in the cold weather, and summer camps for kids. Other ongoing assistance includes support of the DARE Program and the Estuary Council of Seniors. An annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive helps those in need enjoy the holiday. A popular ongoing program is distribution of free dictionaries to all 3rd-grade students in Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Lyme, and Old Lyme.
